The crew of the French science programme "C'est pas sorcier" follows a shepherd who still practises the great transhumance on foot: three days and nights, sixty kilometres of mountain roads with more than 1,000 ewes and their lambs, up to the green summer pastures of the Queyras. The film shows droving through villages, the herding dogs and the guardian patou, night marches, wool and its grease, the economics of shepherding and the flocks' role in maintaining the mountain. Transhumance was inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2023.

Maria Martinez (c. 1887-1980), of the Tewa pueblo of San Ildefonso, was the most famous Native American potter, known for the black-on-black ware she and her husband Julian perfected in the 1920s after a 1908 Smithsonian dig uncovered ancient black shards. Filmed in 1952, the footage follows the whole craft: clay gathered at a sacred place and ground on a metate, mixed half-and-half with volcanic ash, coil-built on a puki, smoothed with a gourd tool, stone-polished, painted with clay slip, then fired in the open under dried dung and smothered so the pots come out shining black.

In Agboro-Idouya, in Benin's Collines, some fifty Nago women, organised since 1990 in the "Egbéoyi Oleuo" group, turn shea nuts into butter through the full artisanal chain: pounding the kernels in mortars, roasting them over the fire, grinding them between two stones into a chocolate-coloured paste, whipping with hot water to separate the fat, washing, boiling and skimming in cauldrons, then moulding butter loaves on leaves. The group's president, Albertine Worou, presents the work, translated by the village chief.

Lang Kambay Dulay (c. 1928-2015), a T'boli of Lake Sebu, wove t'nalak, the black, red and ecru abaca ikat, from the Japanese occupation onward. T'boli "dreamweavers" receive their designs in dreams from the spirit of the abaca; Lang Dulay kept more than a hundred, tying the resist thread by thread before dyeing and weaving on a backstrap loom. Named a National Living Treasure of the Philippines (1998) and a guest of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, she founded a school beside her home to pass the craft to her granddaughters and village youth.

"El tiempo es agua": the Wampis Nation governs its territory in assembly (Peruvian Amazon)

In November 2015, the 85 communities of the Wampis Nation formed Peru’s first autonomous territorial government, under their right to self-determination, to protect 1.3 million hectares of ancestrally held Amazon forest. Filmed at the 6th summit in Kandungos on the Santiago river, the film shows this governance in action: the assembly in the communal hall, the words of pamuk (president) Wrays Pérez and of wise elders such as Andrés Noningo, the map of the "integral territory", the daily life that carries self-government — canoes, gardens, shared meals — and the threats of gold mining and deforestation. The title echoes the Wampis vision: "time is water", the river’s water that keeps the territory alive for future generations.

In the oases of Touat and Tidikelt, water comes from foggaras: underground galleries that drain the water table by gravity down to the palm groves, where a distribution comb divides it between each family’s channels. This CNRPAH film follows the kiyalin al-ma, the water measurers of the ksour communities: measuring shares with a plate of calibrated holes, calculating and recording the 24-unit allocations, meetings of the rights-holders, and the collective upkeep of galleries and channels. Key figures of the community, the measurers are becoming rare: the element was inscribed in 2018 on UNESCO’s Urgent Safeguarding List.

On the Tibetan plateau, "Lum" is the art of bathing in hot springs, herbal decoctions or steam to restore the balance of body and mind, at the heart of Sowa Rigpa traditional medicine and its five-element view of life. The film follows the whole chain of the practice: gathering plants in high pastures, preparing the fermented "five nectars", consulting menpa physicians, bathing at renowned hot springs, prayers accompanying the remedies, and passing the knowledge on within families, clans and monasteries. Every year on the Ayacucho altiplano, the community of Lucanas revives the Inca chaku: hundreds of people form a huge human chain and, holding flagged ropes, drive wild vicuñas step by step into a net corral. The animals are shorn one by one and released alive: their fibre, the world's finest, is weighed, bagged and sold for the community's benefit, which legally manages this resource. Dances and ceremonies accompany the faena — the "fiesta de la vicuña" — a symbol of successful conservation after the species was nearly wiped out by poaching.

In late June 1982, an FR3 crew followed the start of a traditional transhumance in the Hérault: more than 20,000 animals left the yellowing garrigue each year for the pastures of the Causses and Cévennes. Sheep decked with red and blue pompoms, a 3 a.m. departure amid the sound of bells, the Lamalou crossed at dawn; shepherds talk about renting flocks, walking rather than trucking, and a life set by the sun. Transhumance was inscribed by UNESCO in 2023.

On the Apurímac river, at 3,700 m, four Quechua communities renew every June the Q'eswachaka, the last Inca suspension bridge still woven from plant fibres, an inheritance of the Qhapaq Ñan road network. The Ministry of Culture's film follows the whole minka: harvesting and beating the q'oya grass, family-made cords, the offering to Pachamama led by the chakaruwak, braiding the four main cables, releasing the old bridge, and weaving the new deck until the inauguration feast. In May 2005, the elders of a Mossi smith family in Dablo (Burkina Faso) relit, for Christopher Roy's camera, an iron smelt that the region had not practised for some fifty years. The film follows the complete process: charcoal making, digging ore and flux, building the kiln with termite-mound clay, sacrifices, the smelt itself, and forging the iron into a tool. A demonstration explicitly presented as a cultural re-enactment.
