Living heritage of Tanzania: Hadzabe hunters and Maasai warriors
0 view(s)Not rated
Photographer Christophe Ratier joins the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples, in the bushlands of northern Tanzania: bow hunting, honey gathering, wild tubers and campfires, up to the sacred rock of Dondobi. Further north, among the Kisongo Maasai at the foot of the sacred volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, a teenager prepares to become a Moran (warrior). The film shows how sacred places still structure daily life in both societies. (Source: official SLICE channel description.)

The Batak of Sumatra: village, communal plowing and dances (Harvard film, 1929)

A silent 1929 film made for Harvard's Anthropology Department ("Peoples and Cultures of the World" series), preserved by Periscope Film. In the northwestern highlands of Sumatra it documents a Batak village: pile-built houses with sweeping roofs, faces and silver ornaments, blackened teeth, rice-field plowing done as a team with long pointed sticks, betel chewing, rice pounding, weaving inside the houses, and dances — the ornamented sway of the women, the held poses of the men — to gongs, with volcanoes on the horizon. Film from the official nomination of Turkish whistled language to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding (2017). In the steep Black Sea valleys around Kuşköy ("bird village", Giresun), Turkish is articulated in whistles that carry from ridge to ridge — an old answer to the terrain. The film shows whistlers' demonstrations, the school where children learn kuş dili in pairs, elders' recollections, official safeguarding efforts and the annual Bird Language Festival, as mobile phones erode the practice.

Sacred Vessels: Canoes and Navigation in Polowat (Micronesia, 1997) — Part 1

Made in 1997 by Micronesian scholar Vicente M. Diaz with Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding, this documentary follows a new generation of canoe carvers and navigators from Polowat (Central Carolines) and Guam keeping alive the ancestral art of the outrigger canoe and instrument-free navigation. Engravings, maps and sepia archival footage of Carolinian sailing canoes converse with images of modern Guam and of the canoe house, where hulls are carved as children watch. Polowat's master navigators, keepers of one of the Pacific's last traditional navigation schools, tell what the canoe carries in identity and knowledge. Part one of two.

On Jeju Island, a community of women — some in their eighties — free-dive up to ten metres without oxygen to harvest shellfish and seaweed, up to seven hours a day, 90 days a year. Produced by the Haenyeo Museum for the UNESCO nomination, the film shows diving with the tewak buoy, the bulteok fire where the craft is passed on, and rituals for safety and abundant catch. Transmission runs through families, fishery cooperatives and the Haenyeo School, and the practice has advanced women's status in the community. Jeju haenyeo culture was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016.

Weaving the Q'eswachaka Bridge: Living Inka Engineering

Every June, Quechua communities on both sides of the Apurímac canyon rebuild the Q'eswachaka suspension bridge in just three days, as they have continually since Inka times. Q'oya grass is harvested, twisted into cords and braided into massive cables stretched across the gorge before the old bridge is cut away. Produced by the Smithsonian NMAI (2015) and narrated by MIT engineer John Ochsendorf, the film follows every step through to the celebration dances. The tradition has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2013.

The River People: the Pima of Arizona and their water (1948 film)
0 view(s)Not rated
A 1948 colour film by the U.S. Indian Bureau about the Pima (Akimel O'odham), "the River People", in the Arizona desert. It shows desert skills — saguaro fruit harvest, grinding, basketry, pottery — then tells how the Gila River was diverted upstream in the late 19th century, and how the Coolidge Dam (1930) brought irrigation back to the fields. Tutuguri: rite and ritual races of the Tarahumara (1979 film)
0 view(s)Not rated
Shot in the summer of 1979 in the Sierra Tarahumara by Raymonde Carasco and Régis Hébraud. The film follows the Tutuguri, sung and danced by Tranquilino, the saweame (ritual singer): a solar rite older than the Spanish conquest, whose dance builds a sacred space between the four cardinal points. The editing interweaves the rite with the carreras, the ritual races of the Rarámuri people — men's bola race and women's aro race.

In 1960, filmmaker Colin Low (NFB) was invited to the great gathering of the Kainai, a nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy in southern Alberta. Concerned their traditions were fading, the elders allowed the Sun Dance — the circle of tipis, the ceremonies, the beaver and eagle stories — to be filmed for memory. The film also follows daily life on the reserve: ranching, cattle branding, rodeo and the first oil derricks, through the eyes of young Pete Standing Alone. A major NFB archival document.

Ethnomusicologist Sandrine Loncke's documentary (Paris 8 University/CNRS, Point du Jour) follows the preparations — yellow then red make-up, cowrie ornaments —, the yaake dances, the elders' councils, night songs around fires and the striking of camp. Raising the chum: a Nenets family sets up its reindeer-skin tent in the tundra

Observational film with no commentary, shot in winter with a Nenets family, the last great reindeer herders of the Siberian North. After the reindeer-drawn sledge convoy arrives, every step of raising the chum is shown in order: laying the wooden floor and stove on the snow, lifting the poles up to the crown, hoisting the reindeer-skin covers, packing snow against the base to cut the wind. Life then settles in: family tea inside the tent, and a blizzard day spent splitting firewood and frozen meat with an axe (source: SLICE/ZED notes).

To Wake Up the Nakota Language
2 view(s)Not rated
"When you don't know your language or your culture, you don't know who you are," says Armand McArthur, 69, one of the last fluent Nakota speakers in the Pheasant Rump Nakota band of southern Saskatchewan. Directed by Louise BigEagle for the National Film Board of Canada, this short documentary follows him as he teaches the language to the children of his community, on Treaty 4 territory. The film shows what transmitting a language really involves: words, but also a relationship to land, to elders and to oneself. Indigenous languages in North America are among the most endangered in the world, and public health research shows their vitality is one of the strongest correlates of youth wellbeing in these communities.

Rabinal Achí: the Maya Achi dance drama of Guatemala (UNESCO film)

A fifteenth-century Maya dynastic drama, the Rabinal Achí is one of the rare living testimonies of pre-Hispanic theatrical traditions. Performed every year in Rabinal (Baja Verapaz, Guatemala) during the feast of Saint Paul, it recounts in four acts the conflict between two princes, the Rabinal Achí and the K'iche Achí, through masked dances, music and narration in the Achi language. Mask and role bearers pass the tradition from generation to generation, with a ritual dimension linked to the ancestors. The Rabinal Achí was proclaimed a masterpiece (2005) and inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2008). Source: official UNESCO description.

An early-1930s home movie documenting a visit to a small island off Madang, on the north-east coast of New Guinea. It shows the islanders, their villages and above all their boats: canoes and traditional sailing craft that linked the islands. This UNESCO film presents the Andean cosmovision of the Kallawaya, itinerant healers from the Bautista Saavedra region north of La Paz, Bolivia, whose roots go back to pre-Inca times. Their medicine rests on deep knowledge of Andean plant, animal and mineral pharmacopoeia and on ritual knowledge intimately linked to religious beliefs, passed down through generations. Inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008 (proclaimed a Masterpiece in 2003). (Sources: UNESCO, ich.unesco.org.)

Historia Patagonica de Luz y Piedra
0 view(s)5/5 from 1 vote

How did Polynesian wayfinders navigate the Pacific Ocean?
0 view(s)Not rated
This TED-Ed animation explains how, for thousands of years, Polynesian navigators made voyages of several thousand kilometres across the Pacific — an ocean covering more than 160 million km² — without any modern instruments. It describes how they read the Sun, the Moon, the stars, swells and currents to hold a course. It also evokes the communal building of canoes, bringing together navigators, builders and priests. Finally, it details advanced techniques such as using the Southern Cross to estimate south and observing clouds to spot land.

The Balinese subak: managing water as a commons for a thousand years
0 view(s)3/5 from 1 vote
This documentary presents the subak, Bali's thousand-year-old cooperative system for managing water and irrigating rice fields. It shows how this democratic, sustainable mechanism enables local communities to manage the ecology of terraced rice fields across entire watersheds, making the Balinese among the most productive rice farmers in Indonesia. The film highlights that the system runs without fossil fuels or heavy machinery, and recalls its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2012. Finally, it warns of current threats: new farming practices and growing tourism pressure.

How to Build an Igloo: the snow architecture of the Inuit
0 view(s)Not rated
This classic National Film Board of Canada short (1949) shows how to build an igloo using only snow and a knife. Two Inuit men in Canada's Far North choose the site, cut and lay the snow blocks, then shape the entrance: the shelter is completed in an hour and a half. The narration explains how the warmth inside and the wind outside cement the blocks together. As the short winter day draws to a close, the two builders lay out their caribou skins inside, assured of a comfortable night in the heart of the Arctic cold.
