Enkipaata, Eunoto, Olng'esherr: the three Maasai male rites of passage (Kenya, UNESCO film)

0 view(s)Not rated

Enkipaata, Eunoto and Olng'esherr are the three interrelated rites of passage that turn a Maasai boy into a moran (warrior), then a young elder, then a senior elder. The UNESCO film (2018) follows the ochre-painted novices, the Enkipaata dance, the manyatta built by the women, the shaving of the warriors' braids by their mothers at Eunoto and the meat-sharing of Olng'esherr, with elders, youth leaders and women explaining how knowledge passes between age sets (UNESCO Urgent Safeguarding List, file 01390).

The Last Trackers of the Outback: the Aboriginal Art of Reading Tracks (2007)

0 view(s)Not rated

In the Australian bush, the last Aboriginal trackers can still read the passage of people and animals in sand and grass. Through two true cases — the 1963 manhunt for Billy Benn and the search for a little girl lost in the Queensland jungle with tracker George Musgrave — the film shows how this ancestral skill served police and rescue teams for a century, and how it is now at risk of disappearing. The last eagle hunters of Mongolia (Kazakhs of the Altai)

0 view(s)Not rated

In the Altai mountains of western Mongolia, Kazakh burkitshi keep the golden-eagle hunting tradition alive. The report follows the craft step by step: taking an eaglet from a cliff nest, feeding and taming it, hunting on horseback in winter, then releasing the bird back to the wild after a few years. It also shows the next generation — schools, festivals and young huntresses like Aisholpan — facing a changing climate and way of life. (Source: ABC Foreign Correspondent, 2017.)

Kuşköy, the whistling village: Türkiye's "bird language" of the Black Sea (UNESCO)

0 view(s)Not rated

Film from the official nomination of Turkish whistled language to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding (2017). In the steep Black Sea valleys around Kuşköy ("bird village", Giresun), Turkish is articulated in whistles that carry from ridge to ridge — an old answer to the terrain. The film shows whistlers' demonstrations, the school where children learn kuş dili in pairs, elders' recollections, official safeguarding efforts and the annual Bird Language Festival, as mobile phones erode the practice.

The Ráramuri: the running people of Mexico's Copper Canyons

0 view(s)Not rated

Deep in the Copper Canyons of Chihuahua, the Rarámuri have run across mountains and desert trails for centuries. Running is tied to spirituality, health and connection to the land. Children walk hours to school, elders recall races that united villages, and young champions like Catalina Rascón and Miguel Lara carry the tradition – in huarache sandals, up to the Caballo Blanco ultramarathon – under the growing shadow of tourism and cartel violence.

Sacred Vessels: Canoes and Navigation in Polowat (Micronesia, 1997) — Part 1

0 view(s)Not rated

Made in 1997 by Micronesian scholar Vicente M. Diaz with Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding, this documentary follows a new generation of canoe carvers and navigators from Polowat (Central Carolines) and Guam keeping alive the ancestral art of the outrigger canoe and instrument-free navigation. Engravings, maps and sepia archival footage of Carolinian sailing canoes converse with images of modern Guam and of the canoe house, where hulls are carved as children watch. Polowat's master navigators, keepers of one of the Pacific's last traditional navigation schools, tell what the canoe carries in identity and knowledge. Part one of two.

In the 1970s, Yup'ik filmmaker Andrew J. Chikoyak filmed his own community of Tununak, Alaska. Fearing that "once our way is fading", villagers build a traditional sod qasgiq (communal house) as a place where the young will learn the ways of the ancestors. Fish drying, sod-roof building, a shared feast and drum dances follow. Preserved by the Alaska Film Archives, University of Alaska Fairbanks.

To Wake Up the Nakota Language

2 view(s)Not rated

"When you don't know your language or your culture, you don't know who you are," says Armand McArthur, 69, one of the last fluent Nakota speakers in the Pheasant Rump Nakota band of southern Saskatchewan. Directed by Louise BigEagle for the National Film Board of Canada, this short documentary follows him as he teaches the language to the children of his community, on Treaty 4 territory. The film shows what transmitting a language really involves: words, but also a relationship to land, to elders and to oneself. Indigenous languages in North America are among the most endangered in the world, and public health research shows their vitality is one of the strongest correlates of youth wellbeing in these communities.

Historia Patagonica de Luz y Piedra

0 view(s)5/5 from 1 vote

How did Polynesian wayfinders navigate the Pacific Ocean?

0 view(s)Not rated

This TED-Ed animation explains how, for thousands of years, Polynesian navigators made voyages of several thousand kilometres across the Pacific — an ocean covering more than 160 million km² — without any modern instruments. It describes how they read the Sun, the Moon, the stars, swells and currents to hold a course. It also evokes the communal building of canoes, bringing together navigators, builders and priests. Finally, it details advanced techniques such as using the Southern Cross to estimate south and observing clouds to spot land.
