When a female camel rejects her newborn or must adopt an orphaned calf, Mongol herders of the Gobi perform a coaxing ritual: songs, gestures and the music of a fiddle or flute unite mother and calf. The UNESCO film (2015) shows nomadic life, the ritual's techniques and the herdswomen who pass it on from adolescence, as well as its fragility in the face of rural-urban migration (UNESCO Urgent Safeguarding List, file 01061).

Kuşköy, the whistling village: Türkiye's "bird language" of the Black Sea (UNESCO)

0 view(s)Not rated

Film from the official nomination of Turkish whistled language to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding (2017). In the steep Black Sea valleys around Kuşköy ("bird village", Giresun), Turkish is articulated in whistles that carry from ridge to ridge — an old answer to the terrain. The film shows whistlers' demonstrations, the school where children learn kuş dili in pairs, elders' recollections, official safeguarding efforts and the annual Bird Language Festival, as mobile phones erode the practice.

Fallen Eagle: Sioux life from the Plains to the reservation (1950s film)

0 view(s)Not rated

A 1950s American short film (Alan Shilin, with the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs), preserved by Periscope Film. It re-enacts Sioux life of the 1860s-1870s — the nomadic camp following the buffalo, the travois, tipi raising, the peace pipe, the winter count painted on buffalo hide, the hunt, the medicine man, and a full wedding sequence — then shows reservation life in the Black Hills and Badlands after Little Big Horn: rodeos, the Rosebud handicraft museum, cattle ranching. A dated period gaze in places, but gestures and objects are shown in detail.

Deep in the Copper Canyons of Chihuahua, the Rarámuri have run across mountains and desert trails for centuries. Running is tied to spirituality, health and connection to the land. Children walk hours to school, elders recall races that united villages, and young champions like Catalina Rascón and Miguel Lara carry the tradition - in huarache sandals, up to the Caballo Blanco ultramarathon - under the growing shadow of tourism and cartel violence.

The Nuer: the cattle people of the Upper Nile (official excerpt, 1968-1970 footage)

1 view(s)Not rated

Official excerpt of "The Nuer" (1971), a classic of ethnographic cinema filmed in 1968-1970 by Hilary Harris and George Breidenbach with Robert Gardner for Harvard's Peabody Museum. Among the Nuer (Naath) of the Upper Nile, life revolves around cattle: herds moving through the marshes, cone-shaped byres, dung-smoke fires, songs addressed to oxen, gaar scarification. Almost wordless, the film works through direct images and sound.

Sacred Vessels: Canoes and Navigation in Polowat (Micronesia, 1997) — Part 1

0 view(s)Not rated

Made in 1997 by Micronesian scholar Vicente M. Diaz with Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding, this documentary follows a new generation of canoe carvers and navigators from Polowat (Central Carolines) and Guam keeping alive the ancestral art of the outrigger canoe and instrument-free navigation. Engravings, maps and sepia archival footage of Carolinian sailing canoes converse with images of modern Guam and of the canoe house, where hulls are carved as children watch. Polowat's master navigators, keepers of one of the Pacific's last traditional navigation schools, tell what the canoe carries in identity and knowledge. Part one of two.

The Haenyeo of Jeju: Korea's Free-Diving Sea Women

0 view(s)Not rated

On Jeju Island, a community of women — some in their eighties — free-dive up to ten metres without oxygen to harvest shellfish and seaweed, up to seven hours a day, 90 days a year. Produced by the Haenyeo Museum for the UNESCO nomination, the film shows diving with the tewak buoy, the bulteok fire where the craft is passed on, and rituals for safety and abundant catch. Transmission runs through families, fishery cooperatives and the Haenyeo School, and the practice has advanced women's status in the community. Weaving the Q'eswachaka Bridge: Living Inka Engineering

Every June, Quechua communities on both sides of the Apurímac canyon rebuild the Q'eswachaka suspension bridge in just three days, as they have continually since Inka times. Q'oya grass is harvested, twisted into cords and braided into massive cables stretched across the gorge before the old bridge is cut away. Produced by the Smithsonian NMAI (2015) and narrated by MIT engineer John Ochsendorf, the film follows every step through to the celebration dances. The tradition has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2013.

A 1948 colour film by the U.S. Indian Bureau about the Pima (Akimel O'odham), "the River People", in the Arizona desert. It shows desert skills — saguaro fruit harvest, grinding, basketry, pottery — then tells how the Gila River was diverted upstream in the late 19th century, and how the Coolidge Dam (1930) brought irrigation back to the fields. Shot in the summer of 1979 in the Sierra Tarahumara by Raymonde Carasco and Régis Hébraud. The film follows the Tutuguri, sung and danced by Tranquilino, the saweame (ritual singer): a solar rite older than the Spanish conquest, whose dance builds a sacred space between the four cardinal points. American documentary from the late 1940s or early 1950s, filmed on Easter Island: the village of Hanga Roa, the annual supply boat from Chile, and the Rano Raraku quarries with unfinished moai, a 66-foot statue, stone carving tools and ahu platforms. A rare look at the island in the mid-20th century; some theories in the narration have since been disproven. Source: Periscope Film LLC archive (ref. 53534).

Circle of the Sun: the Kainai (Blackfoot) of Alberta between ranch life and the Sun Dance (NFB, 1960)

0 view(s)Not rated

In 1960, filmmaker Colin Low (NFB) was invited to the great gathering of the Kainai, a nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy in southern Alberta. Concerned their traditions were fading, the elders allowed the Sun Dance — the circle of tipis, the ceremonies, the beaver and eagle stories — to be filmed for memory. The film also follows daily life on the reserve: ranching, cattle branding, rodeo and the first oil derricks, through the eyes of young Pete Standing Alone. A major NFB archival document.

Wodaabe, war by dancing: the geerewol, great ceremony of Niger's nomadic Fulani

Every year in the Sahel of Niger, thousands of nomadic Wodaabe Fulani gather for the geerewol: for seven days, two rival lineages confront each other with song and dance as their only weapons, before parting in peace. Ethnomusicologist Sandrine Loncke's documentary (Paris 8 University/CNRS, Point du Jour) follows the preparations — yellow then red make-up, cowrie ornaments —, the yaake dances, the elders' councils, night songs around fires and the striking of camp. To Wake Up the Nakota Language

2 view(s)Not rated

"When you don't know your language or your culture, you don't know who you are," says Armand McArthur, 69, one of the last fluent Nakota speakers in the Pheasant Rump Nakota band of southern Saskatchewan. Directed by Louise BigEagle for the National Film Board of Canada, this short documentary follows him as he teaches the language to the children of his community, on Treaty 4 territory. The film shows what transmitting a language really involves: words, but also a relationship to land, to elders and to oneself. Indigenous languages in North America are among the most endangered in the world, and public health research shows their vitality is one of the strongest correlates of youth wellbeing in these communities.

The Living Stone: Inuit Carving and the Legend of the Sea Spirit (NFB, 1958)

0 view(s)Not rated

This Oscar-nominated NFB documentary (1958) shows the inspiration behind Inuit sculpture: releasing the image the artist sees imprisoned in the rough stone. Filmed among the Inuit of Kinngait (Cape Dorset), it centres on an old legend about carving a sea spirit to bring food to a hungry camp, weaving together daily survival — hunting, igloo building, camp life — art and respect for natural laws. Directed by John Feeney. (Sources: NFB.)

The Bandiagara Escarpment: Dogon Dwellings from the Sky (INA collection, 2007)

0 view(s)Not rated

These images from the INA collection (aerial rushes shot on 1 November 2007 for the film “Home”) fly over the Bandiagara Escarpment in Dogon country (Mali), a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cliff is dotted with caves where the Tellem, the Dogon's predecessors, built granaries, tombs and places of worship; today the Dogon use these structures as burial sites and build their villages, houses and millet granaries at the foot of the cliff. An exceptional document on a unique vertical habitat. (Source: INA.)

“Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life” (1925) is one of the very first ethnographic documentaries in film history. It follows a Bakhtiari group, a nomadic Lur people of Persia (present-day Iran), on their seasonal migration: tens of thousands of people and their immense herds cross the Karun River on rafts of inflated skins, then climb barefoot over the snowy passes of Zard Kuh to reach summer pastures. Historia Patagonica de Luz y Piedra

0 view(s)5/5 from 1 vote

You Are on Indian Land: the Mohawks of Akwesasne defend their rights (NFB, 1969)

0 view(s)4/5 from 1 vote

This archival documentary from the National Film Board of Canada shows the 1969 protest by the Mohawks of Akwesasne, who blockaded the international bridge between Canada and the United States near Cornwall, Ontario. They were protesting customs duties imposed on their goods, invoking the right of free passage guaranteed by the Jay Treaty (1794). Directed by Michael Kanentakeron Mitchell, a Mohawk filmmaker, the film documents from the inside the confrontation with police and the community's collective organizing. It is one of the first Indigenous activist films, produced by the NFB's "Indian Film Crew".

How did Polynesian wayfinders navigate the Pacific Ocean?

0 view(s)Not rated

This TED-Ed animation explains how, for thousands of years, Polynesian navigators made voyages of several thousand kilometres across the Pacific — an ocean covering more than 160 million km² — without any modern instruments. It describes how they read the Sun, the Moon, the stars, swells and currents to hold a course. It also evokes the communal building of canoes, bringing together navigators, builders and priests. Finally, it details advanced techniques such as using the Southern Cross to estimate south and observing clouds to spot land.

The Balinese subak: managing water as a commons for a thousand years

0 view(s)3/5 from 1 vote

This documentary presents the subak, Bali's thousand-year-old cooperative system for managing water and irrigating rice fields. It shows how this democratic, sustainable mechanism enables local communities to manage the ecology of terraced rice fields across entire watersheds, making the Balinese among the most productive rice farmers in Indonesia. The film highlights that the system runs without fossil fuels or heavy machinery, and recalls its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2012. Finally, it warns of current threats: new farming practices and growing tourism pressure.

How to Build an Igloo: the snow architecture of the Inuit

0 view(s)Not rated

This classic National Film Board of Canada short (1949) shows how to build an igloo using only snow and a knife. Two Inuit men in Canada's Far North choose the site, cut and lay the snow blocks, then shape the entrance: the shelter is completed in an hour and a half. The narration explains how the warmth inside and the wind outside cement the blocks together. As the short winter day draws to a close, the two builders lay out their caribou skins inside, assured of a comfortable night in the heart of the Arctic cold.
